The biggest question on everyone’s mind right now is when Scarlet and Epic will be released. We will keep this page updated with the latest from RED.
Tonaci Tran just posted the first footage from a shipping Scarlet-X camera. You can download the .r3d file here: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/3236260/scar…72_R3DTRIM.zip
Tonaci Tran just picked up the very first Scarlet-X from RED headquarters! More Scarlet-Xs with PL mounts (instead of the aluminum Canon mount) shipped out yesterday so we may see more Scarlet unboxing later in the day.
Phil Hollland posted some great charts on reduser showing how the different resolutions on Scarlet effect crop factor on common lenses.
Scarlet is finally ready to ship. Some will actually be ready to ship on Nov. 17th if you don’t need the aluminum Canon mount but the regular packages will start shipping on Dec. 1st.
- Scarlet is now a 4k S35mm camera that ships with the electronic Canon mount for $9,975. It can also shoot 5k stills at up to 12fps.
- You can read a lot of the details about Scarlet here: http://www.scarletuser.com/showpost.php?p=90187&postcount=4
You will want to be hanging out on reduser’s recon thread around 6pm on Nov. 3rd, 2011…RED is going to announce Scarlet is shipping and all of the details we want to know about it. It sounds like RED has some nice surprises in store for us as well (Jim promises they are improvements).
At 7pm, online orders for Scarlet will open. It will be mayhem to be prepared!
Jarred just posted that Scarlet will be shipping before the end of the year. That means within 3 months! RED has previously announced that they wouldn’t say anything until Scarlet was ready to ship so it must be close.
Scarlet may not be ready until September and unfortunately this footage is not going to make the wait any easier. Right click and “save as” to download: Scarlet-120FPS.zip
Jim Jannard just posted that they are having production issues with the 8x fixed lens on the Scarlet. RED’s latest estimate for Scarlet shipping is September 2011. The good news is that based on the picture we posted a couple days ago RED has a bunch of Scarlet’s they are testing internally so the firmware should be nice and solid by the time it ships.
We haven’t posted any updates on Scarlet recently because there really wasn’t much to report. The current situation for both Epic and Scarlet is that RED is just waiting for parts to replace the ones made by factories that got swept away in the Japan tsunami.
Some good news is trickling in, however. Jarred Land just posted an image of an army of fixed lens Scarlets that they are testing internally.
Jim Jannard posted a small update on the old S35 Scarlet. The new official name is Epic-S (not Epic Light) and it will ship in May 2011 for around $12k. Features are similar to the Epic-X but the Epic-S version will have about half the data throughput meaning framerates and Redcode rates will be limited. It will have HDRx as all of the new DSMC cameras do. The entire Epic lineup is being made here in the US. Scarlet will be mass produced overseas in order to bring costs down.
The first Epic-M camera just shipped out to Mark L. Pederson of Offhollywood! more…
This means our Epic-Ms will be available any day now. We will have 3 of the first 10 shipping from RED. Contact us to get on the rental reservation list.
Jim Jannard said now that development is done, the first production Epic-Xs should ship in early February, 2011 with full production ramping up by early April. He went on to say the fixed lens Scarlet is right on it’s heels. It would make sense for RED to have the fixed Scarlet shipping by NAB. Stage 4 Epics and the Epic-S will be shipping in 2011 as well.
Development is over and features are locked down for both the Epics and both the fixed Scarlet and interchangeable Scarlet. RED is currently in the process of preparing the production lines for these cameras. The hand machined Epic-Ms will be shipping any day now and are on a different production line so information gleaned from the process will actually speed up the delivery of production Epics and Scarlets.
Jim Jannard has just posted that he expects the S35 Scarlet to ship before April 2010. Since this is the third Scarlet version in line to ship, we can expect the 2/3″ fixed Scarlet and Cinema Scarlets even before that.
RED does not have a good record when it comes to predicting ship dates but now that Epic is actually going into production hopefully this time they are more accurate.
Jim Jannard just announced that the Epic camera is ready and going into production and Scarlet is coming soon after. RED has stated that Scarlet development is happening in parallel with Epic so once the 3 stages of Epic have started going out the 2/3″ 3k Scarlets should be right behind.
We will keep you updated when we have more specific information.
Apparently RED was using Foxconn China to manufacture the Scarlet camera and now that Foxconn is restructuring and may be pulling out of China RED has to look for a new hardware manufacturer for Scarlet. Epic will not be effected as it is being manufactured in the United States.
Jannard also announced that they have run up against a tough bug in the DSMC “Tattoo” firmware that may delay all of the cameras until it has been worked out. RED has hired 20 new “SWAT” coders to find the bug and solidify the firmware. It is notoriously difficult to predict how long it will take to squash a firmware bug so RED has not posted an updated release schedule. more…
