Hi Justin, ok business sense asks, would you prefer to sell a kit that cost 10k to ten people or a kit that cost 2k to 20000 customers?
irresistible offer: to gain new customers; it's human nature for people to stick to a brand they know and trust that's why u have die hard Nikon and loyal canon who hate switching thirdly you have the lenses stocks that cost more than cameras in some cases and it's not worth switching to another brand for an extra feature or two and lose out on ur existing lenses, that's why RED has to make an irresistible offer. I was and still exited about the scarlet but RED did not do itself or it's potential costumers any favors by creating the hype too early then making false/inaccurate announcements.
I posted on my facebook a lot of pictures of the scarlet pictures and spoke to a few people I knew who were about to buy a cam telling them wait for the scarlet; you'll regret buying a canon now....then I had to buy a canon myself..what an embarrassment...

Hi Ali, I think RED could charge much more for their equipment if they were just in it for the money. Other cameras that come close in features easily cost 5 times as much as the RED One. RED themselves have always said Scarlet was going to be a professional camera. Unfortunately due to the original announcement of 3k for $3k many people began to think of Scarlet as a cheap pro-sumer solution. RED originally hoped to sell the fixed lens 2/3" Scarlet kit for $3,750 but will now raise the price slightly after adding new features like touch focus tracking, miniXLR inputs, and 1080p @60fps. While these features may not be welcome news to those who were looking for something $3k and under, I assure you there are plenty even more excited about the 2/3" Scarlet now. The Canon 7D and 5D Mark II are fantastic solutions for the $3k and under crowd and we love using them ourselves. The Scarlets will be capable of many things the Canons are not (180fps bursts for example), however, so the delay and price increase is not a deal breaker.

there are serious doubts about Red's credibility, they said that why to rush to an empty market (recession), make no mistake they have their pofit first on their mind before the accountability of their word
and they are like any other greedy business, I was under the impression from their first video about the scarlet that they are genuine about making affordable cameras for indi filmmakers but that's another marketing illusion in their construction of the RED brand and they trying to pair themselves with Apple as=> "think different'...the white rosy alternative to dim expensive camera market. I just bought the 7d after waiting and waiting for 'not the scarlet' but the actual release date... I would have waited a few month if I knew when it will be released and saved up my limited resources. what a waste of my time.

Hi Robert, RED did not feel comfortable announcing solid dates for Scarlet as of Oct. 30th so they delayed the announcement till Nov. 30th. 3k for $3k was for the a previous version of Scarlet that had fewer capabilities. The prices changed when RED decided to go modular with the DSMC system. We will know for sure on Nov. 30th but the fixed lens 3k Scarlet kit should include 2 x minXLRs, CF module, small removable LCD, and the 8 x zoom fixed lens. RED's target price for this was $3,750 but the added features (touch focus tracking, xlr inputs, 1080p @60fps) have apparently raised the price a bit.

I know AVID and RED are working on a native REDCODE RAW workflow but I do not use it myself and can't vouch for it's stability. www.avid.com/red/

Epic and Scarlet are definitely not vaporware and beta versions of Epic DSMC will be going out to a select few before the end of this year. Keep in mind Scarlet uses all the same modules as Epic so most of the Scarlet system will get beta tested at the same time.

I emailed them direct and they said that it would be announced on Oct. 30. Been waiting to upgrade my standard def camera for over a year after I heard about the Scarlett at the DV show in Dec 08. 3,000 for 3k. Now does that include the lens, 2 xlrs audio inputs, viewfinder, flip out screen, vu's etc. The stuff that the real word of video production uses. Also will it work with my Avid 3.5 and no I aint going to use that toy FCP. They are right down the street from me in Lake Forest, I should just go in and ask them direct, otherwise I am going to buy a JVC HD200 and be done with it. I hope this is not all vaporware!!

Nothing announced for Scarlet yet. But the Epic-X beta program should start before the end of 2009 with production models shipping early 2010. www.camerarentalz.com/scarlet-epic-release-schedule
