Jim Jannard posted today that the Scarlet and Epic release schedule will be announced on Friday, Oct. 30th. The only bad news we can expect is a slight delay from the original announcement because they will not be doing a public beta test this time. Jim stated they will still have the community beta test the cameras, it just won’t be open to all early serial holders like last time. We can’t wait to see who gets picked to test these first DSMCs.
This isn’t really a surprise as we already knew there was a delay because the first cameras were scheduled to ship at the end of Summer ’09 which has already passed. Everything else in the Oct. 30th announcement will be good news and Jim specifically said people expecting large price increases can relax. Do we have any idea about how accessible these cameras (the scarlet) will be to the average Joe like myself? If I want to get one, which I do, will I be waiting months or years?
The last we heard from RED they were still planning on mass producing the 3k Scarlets so that there wouldn’t be much of a wait. I expect we will get an update to this on their Oct. 30th announcement.
As an emerging filmmaker, I relish the opportunity to devour the spasm of knowledge that is the internet, scanning for tools, tricks of the trade, influences and historical mind fodder.
Many years, no, many many years ago whilst researching the holy grail of digital cinema, ‘the filmlook’ I began compiling shedules for work related projects.
A dv camera here hdv there, from 720p to 1080p and 24fps to 60fps and so on, you get the idea.
To satisfactorily achieve cinema quality, not just an imitation, but what could be considered professional, comparable cinema was at that time prohibitively expensive.
Manufacturers daily ravaged their competitors limb from limb as offers to seduce custom became the daily udder.
Red swept like a nasty a funk through the market in the minds of its competitors offering what we had all dreamed of, true cinema quality in a digital format, at a price which lead to bleeding ears.
As respected filmmakers flocked to hail praise for the Red One camera, many mocked it’s 4K resolution, 35mm compatible lenses, shallow depth of field and aggressively low sale price.
In nine days Red One gives birth to what many consider the future of film production and those who argue otherwise can reload their s16 and s35mm cans, wait hours for rushes, complain about the unfortunate disparity between film stock, gripe over the extortionate expense for printing, whilst we enjoy immediate data transfer and render all footage, whilst nestling in the fluffy pillow that is the rapid production rate.
The news is already out their, Red’s offspring is a girl, but in this bizarre marriage the infant is to be adopted by another relative, who will replace Red One as the sole parent.
I wish the Red family well in their future and hope executives take note as budgets tumble across the industry and the digital revolution gets it’s wings.

omg…
What happened to scarlet????? I don’t have 28k and I don’t have a red one…but I have 2 red eyes now….let me focus now on getting a canon….good bye
I emailed them direct and they said that it would be announced on Oct. 30. Been waiting to upgrade my standard def camera for over a year after I heard about the Scarlett at the DV show in Dec 08. 3,000 for 3k. Now does that include the lens, 2 xlrs audio inputs, viewfinder, flip out screen, vu’s etc. The stuff that the real word of video production uses. Also will it work with my Avid 3.5 and no I aint going to use that toy FCP. They are right down the street from me in Lake Forest, I should just go in and ask them direct, otherwise I am going to buy a JVC HD200 and be done with it. I hope this is not all vaporware!!
Hi Robert, RED did not feel comfortable announcing solid dates for Scarlet as of Oct. 30th so they delayed the announcement till Nov. 30th. 3k for $3k was for the a previous version of Scarlet that had fewer capabilities. The prices changed when RED decided to go modular with the DSMC system. We will know for sure on Nov. 30th but the fixed lens 3k Scarlet kit should include 2 x minXLRs, CF module, small removable LCD, and the 8 x zoom fixed lens. RED’s target price for this was $3,750 but the added features (touch focus tracking, xlr inputs, 1080p @60fps) have apparently raised the price a bit.
I know AVID and RED are working on a native REDCODE RAW workflow but I do not use it myself and can’t vouch for it’s stability. http://www.avid.com/red/
Epic and Scarlet are definitely not vaporware and beta versions of Epic DSMC will be going out to a select few before the end of this year. Keep in mind Scarlet uses all the same modules as Epic so most of the Scarlet system will get beta tested at the same time.
there are serious doubts about Red’s credibility, they said that why to rush to an empty market (recession), make no mistake they have their pofit first on their mind before the accountability of their word
and they are like any other greedy business, I was under the impression from their first video about the scarlet that they are genuine about making affordable cameras for indi filmmakers but that’s another marketing illusion in their construction of the RED brand and they trying to pair themselves with Apple as=> “think different’…the white rosy alternative to dim expensive camera market. I just bought the 7d after waiting and waiting for ‘not the scarlet’ but the actual release date… I would have waited a few month if I knew when it will be released and saved up my limited resources. what a waste of my time.
Hi Ali, I think RED could charge much more for their equipment if they were just in it for the money. Other cameras that come close in features easily cost 5 times as much as the RED One. RED themselves have always said Scarlet was going to be a professional camera. Unfortunately due to the original announcement of 3k for $3k many people began to think of Scarlet as a cheap pro-sumer solution. RED originally hoped to sell the fixed lens 2/3″ Scarlet kit for $3,750 but will now raise the price slightly after adding new features like touch focus tracking, miniXLR inputs, and 1080p @60fps. While these features may not be welcome news to those who were looking for something $3k and under, I assure you there are plenty even more excited about the 2/3″ Scarlet now. The Canon 7D and 5D Mark II are fantastic solutions for the $3k and under crowd and we love using them ourselves. The Scarlets will be capable of many things the Canons are not (180fps bursts for example), however, so the delay and price increase is not a deal breaker.
Hi Justin, ok business sense asks, would you prefer to sell a kit that cost 10k to ten people or a kit that cost 2k to 20000 customers?
irresistible offer: to gain new customers; it’s human nature for people to stick to a brand they know and trust that’s why u have die hard Nikon and loyal canon who hate switching thirdly you have the lenses stocks that cost more than cameras in some cases and it’s not worth switching to another brand for an extra feature or two and lose out on ur existing lenses, that’s why RED has to make an irresistible offer. I was and still exited about the scarlet but RED did not do itself or it’s potential costumers any favors by creating the hype too early then making false/inaccurate announcements.
I posted on my facebook a lot of pictures of the scarlet pictures and spoke to a few people I knew who were about to buy a cam telling them wait for the scarlet; you’ll regret buying a canon now….then I had to buy a canon myself..what an embarrassment…
It’s twins, due date July 2010.
Here are some early scans and musings from a proud parent.
