One thing that I am still very unclear about is which modules I’ll need to have a functional scarlet. Other than the brain, I realize you’ll need a lens, power (batteries), a viewfinder of some sort, audio/video components, data storage, and maybe a couple adapters. But when I add all these components up I come to at least a $7000 camera, which is far from the “$3000″ one I was excited about. Maybe I’m wrong. Maybe some of this stuff comes with the camera (doubt it). Do we know which modules are necessary for a bare bones but functional scarlet with interchangeable lens?

It looks like the brains will come with a dumb PL mount so you may not need to budget for that. You have two options for power: the RED side handle which has one battery ($950) and the battery module with two batteries ($1,250). Electronic viewfinders are very expensive ($3,200) so many will opt for the 2.8″ touchscreen LCD ($900) instead. The cheapest data storage module will be the CF card reader ($500) which also has an LCD/EVF port so you will not need an I/O module. RED hasn’t confirmed but a 16gb CF card should get you between 10 – 16 minutes of 3k RAW footage. The Scarlet brains will come with two independent microphone level channels, balanced input circuits, 48V Phantom Power, digitized at 24-bit 48KHz so you won’t need an audio module. You will only need the Scarlet back adapter if you get one of the modules that attach to the back like the battery module. So for a minimum setup you are looking at the Scarlet brain, CF module, right handle and 2.8″ touchscreen LCD. We don’t know the final price for the Scarlet brain but the minimum module setup will cost $2,350. RED gave discounts for accessory packages with the RED One so it is likely they will do something similar with Scarlet. Before the Oct. 30th announcement RED was hoping to bring a shootable package for the fixed lens Scarlet in at around $3,750. That would mean they were planning on some serious discounts for module packages. We’ll see on Nov. 30th how much this has gone up.
