RED showed off the 4k laser projector they announced at NAB 2011 today. Ridley Scott and his son Luke shot a short film “Loom” on Epic cameras and the 3ality Technica Atom rig that was shown in RED’s NAB theater in 2k passive 3D (engineers were in a hotel room working on the 4k boards). The laser projector will be able to do simultaneous 4k for each eye very soon.

We attended the very first screening at 9am on Monday morning and were blown away. Being a Ridley Scott production shot by Darius Wolwski, 10 seconds in we forgot about 5k, lasers, simultaneous 3D and were just drawn in to the great story and beautiful images. It really hit us when we walked out of the theater, we can have THAT for $10k. Amazingly a REDray player is built in.

The RED Laser Projector is natively stereoscopic meaning all you need to view 3D is a polarized silver screen and passive 3D glasses. Due to the lasers providing the projector a very stable light intensity per primary color it can auto calibrate itself. For 2D a standard white screen or just a wall will suffice.

Traditional designs place the lamp in the projector head, it gets hot, and hence you need to put substantial cooling (fans) there too. In our modular design, the “lamp” is in a rack mount chassis that can be located a considerable distance from the optical head. So no “projection box” needed.

Base has 3 lemo powered outputs for Focus/Iris/Zoom for Heden or Preston lens motors. Plug in your motor of choice and you are set.
Has full wireless lens control built in for 3ality Technica, Preston and eventually other lens controls. No more MDR hanging off your camera. Just show up with hand control of choice.
Has built in wireless timecode receiver. – Jam camera timecode wirelessly from sound cart etc. No more Lockit box via velcro hanging off the side of camera.
Has wireless Audio receiver built-in. – Send audio wirelessly to camera from anywhere….. audio is embedded into clips on the R3D file on your REDMAG.
Has wireless 1080p Video transmission built-in. – You heard that right.. We finally figured it out. less than one frame latency.. with a healthy working distance.
3rd front lemo can power Cinetape if Zoom control is not needed.
V-LOCK plate on back. One REDBRICK powers everything including the camera.

1st Scarlet Has Been Picked Up!

Tonaci Tran just picked up the very first Scarlet-X from RED headquarters! More Scarlet-Xs with PL mounts (instead of the aluminum Canon mount) shipped out yesterday so we may see more Scarlet unboxing later in the day.

Scarlet to Ship by Dec. 1st 2011

Scarlet is finally ready to ship. Some will actually be ready to ship on Nov. 17th if you don’t need the aluminum Canon mount but the regular packages will start shipping on Dec. 1st.

Scarlet is now a 4k S35mm camera that ships with the electronic Canon mount for $9,975. It can also shoot 5k stills at up to 12fps.

Epic-X Shipping Next Week!

We have made quite a few posts about when Epic was supposed to ship but now it looks like the actual moment has come. Jim Jannard just posted on reduser that Epic-X will finally start shipping next week with large quantities going out by the 2nd week of Sep.

“Always late but worth the wait”… at some point “late” turns into “now”. “Now” is next week.

Half a Pound Shaved Of the Epic Camera

The RED Epic camera brain now weighs under 4 lbs. RED just announced they made some changes to the heat sink and were able to shave half a pound off the weight of the Epic brain.

Army of Scarlets

We haven’t posted any updates on Scarlet recently because there really wasn’t much to report. The current situation for both Epic and Scarlet is that RED is just waiting for parts to replace the ones made by factories that got swept away in the Japan tsunami.

Some good news is trickling in, however. Jarred Land just posted an image of an army of fixed lens Scarlets that they are testing internally.

James Cameron Buys 50 Epic-M Cameras

Jim Jannard announced that James Cameron just bought 50 Epic-M cameras. That is a $3 million dollar vote of confidence from a guy who can buy any camera in the world. Cameron joins the trend of high end directors buying hordes of their own cameras: Peter Jackson recently bought 30 Epic cameras for his 3 year Hobbit shoot.

RED Atom 3D Rig for Epic

RED and Element Technica are building a 3D rig specifically for the Epic camera called the Atom. It is designed to work with the minimalistic style of the Epic brain and will have an AJA Hi5 multiplexor and Gen10 units built in negating the need for on rig cables.
