It’s not always the larger sensor that has lenses with wider apertures. Medium format lenses, for example, have maximum apertures around 20-50mm (e.g. 135mm f/4.0). FF35 lenses with the same field of view have much wider apertures, such as 40-70mm (85mm f/1.2). This leads to the situation where a smaller sensor (FF35) is capable of thinner DOF than a larger sensor (MFDB, Medium Format Digital Back).
