Foxconn Suicides Effect Scarlet Release Date

Scarlet Release Tracker

Apparently RED was using Foxconn China to manufacture the Scarlet camera and now that Foxconn is restructuring and may be pulling out of China RED has to look for a new hardware manufacturer for Scarlet. Epic will not be effected as it is being manufactured in the United States.

Jannard also announced that they have run up against a tough bug in the DSMC “Tattoo” firmware that may delay all of the cameras until it has been worked out. RED has hired 20 new “SWAT” coders to find the bug and solidify the firmware. It is notoriously difficult to predict how long it will take to squash a firmware bug so RED has not posted an updated release schedule. more…

The RED guys are so high on themselves and confident from their previous one-time success that they’ve lost that sense of duty to the customer. I wonder how many potential customers are just fed up with a company that treats them with such bravado and self-righteousness. Well guess what? Canon has already done what RED was aiming to do and that is bring film-like digital quality to every filmmaker. Wake up Red, it is we the customers who decide who succeeds and who doesn’t -apparently you won’t even get to the point of letting us decide … good riddance! And kudos to Canon, Panasonic, and all those producing HDSLRs that we can all use today.

Important to highlight the people who work at Foxconn, under conditions that are deplorable and caused such great pain to those that took their own lives and the pain their loss is causing their loved ones. May Chinese workers continue to fight for their rights and reduce the exploitation of foreign companies and in the end (yes my friends, this is where the customer is wrong), the foreign consumer.
