I absolutely fully concur with every single word of RICK IDAK. I’ve never read an entire blog or statement in my life, and agreed with every single letter and word from beginning to end, and not only agree, but feel deep inside my heart. I actually literally had to let out a blast of vocal energy at the end of reading Rick’s thoughts on how the Camera industry has screwed themselves by always leading us down this slow innovation miner improvement bull crap… and now a new company on the scene is killing the century old dogs… Wow… Goodbye and Good RIDDANCE SONY/PANASONIC/PanaVision/Canon/ARRI/ etc etc etc… Nah nah nah nahhhh nah nah nah naaaaaahhh… HEY HEY>.. GOOD BYE!

Hi Steven, at this point the latest version of Sony’s Vegas and Adobe’s Premiere Pro support drag n drop editing of the R3D RAW files that the Scarlet will generate. You can also edit Scarlet footage with any editor by transcoding the RAW files with Redcine-X, a free program from RED: http://www.red.com/support Redcine-X also supports some basic editing functions on it’s own.

The many surprises Indi-productions are about to encounter. The last two years have witnessed an exponential growth and advancement in digital acquisition, and I am truly grateful to be a part of these exciting times. It was not long ago (around 1995) that Sony released the VX1000 which brought digital video to the masses. Then Panasonic upped the ante by bringing 24p to the DVX100. And it is from these humble beginnings that the indi-productions find their roots in state of the art technology that challenged the status quo. Fast forwarding to 2010, we find ourselves on the cusp of another revolution from yet another manufacture: RED Digital Cinema. For the last couple of years Red has aggressively pushed the market forward in digital cinema with their Red One. And while this camera is very affordable in comparison to other cameras of its’ caliber on the market, it is still relatively expensive for mass market indi-productions. Part of the fixed lens is actually inside the Scarlet brain so it is more compact then if you attached a similar detachable zoom. But for sure price is the huge plus. An electric zoom with similar capabilities can run up to $20k for the lens alone.

That’s great news… I was starting to get worried! Thanks a lot for tracking that down for me. A good reminder not to believe everything you hear on the internet (the boon/bane of the 21 Century). I wonder, is there any advantage to having the fixed lens other than a lower price (which is a great reason for me)?

Ok it looks like that $20k number originated here: www.ocbj.com/article They definitely don't know what they are talking about as they claim "Slumdog Millionare" was shot on the RED camera when it was actually shot on the SI-2K digital camera. I would say the fixed lens Scarlet ready to shoot starts at just over $5k: fixed lens Scarlet kit + 16gb CF card = $5,245.
