These are interesting times with the Oscar for best picture going to a movie shot on the S16mm format (The Hurt Locker) and a film shot on the Canon 7D winning best film at SXSW. You definitely don’t need to be shooting on 35mm film to be a contender these days.

This short film was shot on the Canon 7D and graded to look very flat. Unusual for 7D footage.

“The Bridge” is a short film being shot on the Canon 7D, 5D Mark II and 550D T2i. You can view the Canon T2i clip here. Here is what they say about working around the jello effect and aliasing:

Although the 5DM2 and 7D have been a god-send for my film, it’s not without problems. I’ve already mentioned the rolling shutter earlier and I’ve limited the issue by purchasing IS lenses, a monopod, and a Steadicam Merlin. The “jello-effect”, as bad as it is, I can work around with and deal with. My biggest problem with these cameras is the moire or “aliasing”. I’ve had to throw shots out completely because it rears its ugly neck and as of now, there isn’t really a workaround or fix for it. You can hide it with some depth-of-field trickery but if you require a wide-shot, all you can do is cross your fingers and hope it doesn’t show up anywhere in your shot. If it does, you either throw it out or live with it, I’ve done both.

Here is a beautiful video shot at twilight and occasional black & white on the Canon 7D at mostly ISO 3200 and 6400. Lenses used: Tamron 17-50mm 2.8, Tokina 11-16mm, Tokina 12-24mm, and Nikon 75-150mm. The Neat Video plugin was used to reduce noise on some shots.

Music video for the band “Arrested Development” on Canon L series lenses including the 17 – 35 f/2.8, 24 – 105 f/4 and 70 – 200 f/2.8. It was edited in Final Cut Pro and Color.

Canon Philippines lent us a pre-production model of the 7d. We got it Tuesday 6pm and had to return it the following Thursday at noon.

We wanted to document something truly Filipino and came up with the idea of shooting a “Perya”. There really is no direct equivalent in English. It’s not as grand as a carnival, not as permanent and posh as an amusement park, there are no pumpkins nor cows in competition like a country fair. It is what it is – a Perya.

Shot in 1920 x 1080 at 24p. Transcoded to XDcam codec. Edited in Premiere Pro CS3. No color grading was utilized. No additional lights used.
